Brazil’s Lula Condemns Israel for Detention of Gaza Flotilla Member
- On Tuesday, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva condemned the detention of Global Sumud Flotilla members Thiago Avila and Saif Abukeshek, calling the imprisonment "an unjustifiable action by the Israeli government."
- Israeli forces intercepted the flotilla last week in international waters, 45 nautical miles west of the Greek island Kythira and 600 nautical miles from Gaza, seizing more than 170 activists attempting to deliver humanitarian aid.
- According to Adalah Legal Center, Avila and Abukeshek remain in total isolation, subjected to 24/7 high-intensity lighting and repeated interrogations, while detainees pace to avoid hypothermia.
- The Ashkelon Magistrates' Court granted a six-day extension for the pair's detention through May 10, with Adalah noting that Israeli domestic law should not apply since the activists were abducted over 1,000 kilometers from Gaza.
- Interrogators have explicitly threatened Avila, stating he would either be killed or spend 100 years in jail, while Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs claims the men are affiliated with the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad.
