12-Year-Old Injured 'Train Surfing' On MBTA Red Line
Transit police said the boy was taken to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries after the train operator stopped the Red Line and called for help.
On Tuesday, a 12-year-old boy sustained serious injuries after falling while attempting to 'train surf' on an MBTA Red Line car, MBTA Transit Police said.
The child boarded the train at the JFK/UMass station in Dorchester shortly before 1 a.m. with a friend before climbing onto the roof, Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan said.
After falling from the moving car, the boy suffered a 'serious but non-life-threatening head injury,' Sullivan said, while the alert train operator stopped the vehicle and called for help.
Boston Carmen's Union Local 589, representing over 6,000 MBTA workers, praised the operator's 'swift actions' that 'helped save this person from a possible tragedy,' as police continue investigating.
Regarding the danger of 'train surfing,' Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan warned the act is extremely dangerous and 'could literally cost you your life,' noting this thrill-seeking behavior is rising among young people.
