Former Paramedic Faces Manslaughter Charge in in-Custody Death
BOULDER, COLORADO, JUL 11 – Paramedic Edward McClure faces manslaughter charges after sedating and restraining Jesus Lopez Barcenas, whose death involved sudden cardiac arrest and methamphetamine toxicity, officials said.
- On December 27, 2024, officers from the University of Colorado Boulder responded to a report of a suspicious individual at the campus Center for Innovation & Creativity and subsequently took Jesus Lopez Barcenas into custody.
- Barcenas resisted arrest, tried to grab an officer's gun, and was restrained face-down on a concrete ramp before a paramedic injected him with a sedative without a proper medical assessment.
- Barcenas, age 36, died two days later from complications of sudden cardiac arrest after a physical altercation involving prone positioning, restraints, sedation, and methamphetamine toxicity.
- District Attorney Michael Dougherty stated in a July 11 release that paramedic Edward McClure's reckless acts caused Barcenas' death while clearing police officers of wrongdoing, and McClure was charged with manslaughter and forgery.
