Bots Now Generate More Web Traffic Than Humans, Says Cloudflare

Cloudflare said automated requests now make up 57.5% of HTML traffic as agentic AI and malicious bots reshape web economics.

  • On Wednesday, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince reported that bots now account for 57.5% of HTTP requests to HTML content, surpassing human traffic at 42.5% for the first time in internet history.
  • Prince had predicted this crossover by the end of 2027, but agentic AI—bots acting on behalf of users rather than scraping data—accelerated the shift eighteen months early.
  • At SXSW, Prince described the request-volume asymmetry: a human visits five websites while an AI agent visits 5,000. HUMAN Security reports automated traffic growing eight times faster than human traffic across 2025.
  • Advertising models built on human attention face structural deflation because agent-driven traffic generates no pageviews or conversion events underpinning CPM and CPC rates. VC-backed companies must remodel immediately.
  • The platform shift forces a redesign of the web's identity layer because the old binary of "bot or not" is obsolete. Companies must build trust rails that authenticate and permission agents rather than blocking them wholesale.
