Bothell Student Tensions over Resource Officer Flare Into Large Protest at City Hall
More than 200 students marched to City Hall, saying the officer helped them feel safer as the district plans two campus supervisors.
On Monday, May 18, 2026, hundreds of Bothell High School students walked out of class to protest the Northshore School Board's decision to terminate school resource officer Garrett Ware's contract, with roughly one-third of the student body participating.
The board voted 4-1 last week to eliminate the 30-year-old SRO program, citing concerns about equitable policing and student comfort, ending a decades-long presence at the campus .
A 2024 survey found 77% of BHS students believed the program promoted safety, yet the board proceeded; an online petition to reverse the decision has garnered nearly 4,000 signatures.
Demonstrators marched to Bothell City Hall on Monday, chanting "We want Ware" and "Vote them out" to target the four board members who voted against renewing the officer's contract.
Ware will remain on campus through June; district spokesperson Carri Campbell said two unarmed campus supervisors will begin next year, receiving training in social-emotional learning and restorative justice.
