Boston Firefighter Killed After Crews Battled Fire at Dorchester Residence
The firefighter was later pronounced dead after a mayday call, and investigators said the fire spread across all 3 floors before crews stopped it.
On Saturday, Boston firefighter Robert T. Kilduff Jr. died after falling from the third-floor porch of a burning triple-decker home on Treadway Road in Dorchester. He was a 24-year veteran of the Boston Fire Department.
Crews responded to the three-alarm structure fire around 8:15 p.m., finding heavy flames shooting through the roof. Firefighters utilized multiple ground and aerial ladders to contain the blaze, which affected all three floors of the building.
Boston Fire Commissioner Rodney Marshall described Kilduff, a Marine veteran serving with Rescue Company 2, as a 'firefighter's firefighter' who had saved a colleague's life last month.
Tributes poured in for Kilduff, with Mayor Michelle Wu stating the family has 'given everything for our country and for our city,' while Boston Fire Fighters Local 718 President Sam Dillon called him 'one of our most courageous and dedicated firefighters.'
The department faces its first line-of-duty death in over a decade as the fire's cause remains under investigation. Marshall noted responders are 'never truly safe until you get home.
