Car Giant Hyundai to Use Human-Like Robots in Factories

Atlas robot autonomously sorts roof racks at Hyundai's Georgia factory using AI and machine learning, part of efforts to automate repetitive manufacturing tasks, Boston Dynamics said.

  • On Monday at CES, Boston Dynamics and Hyundai unveiled the Atlas humanoid robot, which recently practiced sorting roof racks at Hyundai's Georgia factory before plans to deploy it in 2028 and expand tasks by 2030.
  • Framing a broader strategy, Hyundai Motor Co. positioned humanoids as central to its 'AI robotics' plan, backed by $26 billion U.S. investment through 2028 and 88% ownership of Boston Dynamics.
  • More than 4,000 digital Atlas avatars trained for six hours using motion capture and VR teleoperation, featuring human-scale tactile hands and lifting up to 110 pounds, Scott Kuindersma said.
  • Hyundai plans to mass-produce as many as 30,000 robots annually in the U.S., acknowledging concerns about job losses while needing factory workers and robot trainers at its Georgia plant.
  • Amid a global race for humanoids, analysts project a $38 billion market by 2035 and warn of fierce competition from roughly 200 Chinese firms, while Boston Dynamics strengthens ties with Nvidia Corp.
