Crossing Canada-U.S. Border for Historic Gold Rush Trek Banned for 2025
- On June 5, 2025, Parks Canada updated its policies to prohibit hikers from crossing the international boundary along the Chilkoot Trail for the 2025 hiking season.
- This ban follows border restrictions starting in 2020 from COVID-19 policies and continued cross-border limitations since 2022 due to security and flood damage on the U.S. side.
- The remote trail lacks customs infrastructure, and both countries have reopened their sides separately, allowing hikes that begin and end on the same side only.
- Luke Reimer, a representative of the Canada Border Services Agency, indicated that the agency is enhancing border security, noting the difficulty in effectively monitoring individuals crossing the border along this trail.
- As a result, hikers can only undertake multi-day trips on either side while new measures and legislation aim to strengthen remote border crossing controls.
