Missing Dog Found Safe More than 1,000 Miles Away. But How He Got There Remains a Mystery
A microchip led shelter staff to Melissa Burris, who flew to Greensboro after Rio was found safe more than 1,000 miles from home.
Melissa Burris reunited with her Australian Shepherd, Rio, in Greensboro, North Carolina, after the 10-year-old dog traveled over 1,000 miles from his home in Sand Springs, Oklahoma.
Rio, described by Burris as an 'escape artist,' vanished on July 30 after wandering from his Oklahoma home. She posted in local groups searching for him, but unlike past disappearances, he did not return.
A good Samaritan discovered Rio in Greensboro and brought him to Guilford County Animal Services. Director Jorge Ortega said staff scanned the dog's microchip, enabling them to conduct 'detective work' locating Burris.
Upon learning Rio's location, Burris immediately booked a flight to North Carolina, retrieved him, and drove him home. She said, 'I'm happy to see the smiles back on his face.'
Guilford County Animal Services Director Jorge Ortega emphasized that microchips provide permanent pet identification. Both Ortega and Burris urged owners to keep registry information current, noting it was essential to their reunion.
