Body found in landing gear of plane at Gatwick Airport
Sussex Police said officers are investigating after emergency services found the body of a man in the plane’s undercarriage.
On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, emergency services discovered a man's body in the landing gear of an Air Arabia Maroc Airbus A320 after it landed at Gatwick Airport from Tangier, Morocco.
The man likely climbed into the Airbus A320's gear compartment before departing Tangier. The Federal Aviation Administration reports over 77% of stowaways die from crushing, hypothermia, or hypoxia during such attempts.
Sussex Police confirmed an active investigation, stating, "Officers are investigating and a report will be prepared for the coroner." Gatwick staff assisted authorities following the 11:45 am discovery.
Reflecting on the human cost, Sussex Police told Metro, "Everyone is devastated that anyone would feel so desperate they would risk their life in this way." The man's identity remains unreleased.
Previous cases, such as the 2019 incident where a stowaway fell over Clapham, illustrate ongoing difficulties in securing departure areas against unauthorized access. These recurring events demonstrate persistent aviation safety challenges.
Casablanca-based airline Air Arabia Maroc said: "The incident was discovered upon arrival of Air Arabia Maroc flight 3O102 from Tangier to London Gatwick on June 16, 2026, and the relevant authorities were immediately notified. We share the grief of all those affected by this incident and are working closely with the relevant authorities in their investigation." Sussex Police also commented on the incident.
