Body cam footage captures the moment officer saves choking baby
Corporal Greggory Cates performed the Heimlich maneuver on a choking infant, saving her life; he was awarded the Life Saving Medal by the City of Orange.
- On Jan. 19, Corporal Greggory Cates was on patrol when a frantic mother called 911 about her choking baby, and after Cates helped the infant breathe again, he accompanied the family to a hospital.
- Last Monday the Orange Police Department said it received a frantic call from a mother reporting her daughter wasn't breathing, and when Cates arrived the mother ran into the street handing him the infant.
- Bodycam footage shows Cates performing the Heimlich, delivering about six or seven back blows, and after the seventh the baby cried as the parents sighed in relief.
- Officials reunited Corporal Greggory Cates with the baby and her parents Tuesday after the City of Orange awarded him the Life Saving Medal during a council meeting.
- Cates, a father of two, said the family removed hair clips and are doing great, but the incident continues to replay in his mind when he watches the bodycam video.
