The municipality of Dordrecht is having an independent investigation carried out into problems with hundreds of basement graves at the Essenhof cemetery. In at least 472 of the 2,600 graves, bodies have not fully decomposed after the burial rights have expired – often ten or fifteen years. The municipality and the cemetery have been aware of the issue since 2015, but it only came to light last year.
