Bobby Valentine, in disguise again, revels in his most famous moment with Mets
Valentine recreated the disguise before his Mets Hall of Fame induction, recalling the 1999 stunt that led to a $5,000 fine and two-game suspension.
On Friday, former New York Mets manager Bobby Valentine donned a fake mustache and sunglasses at Citi Field to throw the ceremonial first pitch to a similarly disguised Mr. Met ahead of his Saturday induction into the Mets Hall of Fame.
Valentine originally debuted the disguise on June 9, 1999, to return to the dugout after being ejected during an extra-inning game against the Toronto Blue Jays, encouraged by players Orel Hershiser and Robin Ventura.
Following a 27-28 start, Valentine predicted a 40-15 run which the team accomplished to finish 97-66; league officials fined him $5,000 and suspended him two games for the stunt.
The Citi Field crowd embraced the homage, with fans wearing the same sunglasses and mustache combination distributed as a ballpark giveaway, celebrating one of the most memorable moments in the team's 57-year history.
Now the executive director of athletics at Sacred Heart University, Valentine remains synonymous with the 1999 Shea Stadium episode, which he recently recounted while reflecting on his decades-long career.
