Coast Guard Responds to Fire on Vessel with 42 People Aboard About 100 Miles South of Grand Isle
All 42 people aboard were transferred to nearby vessels as crews extinguished the blaze and began assessing damage and pollution risks.
On Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard responded to a fire aboard the Cypress-flagged research vessel Rem Andes about 100 nautical miles south of Grand Isle, Louisiana.
Built at the Remontowa shipyard in Poland, the Norwegian-operated Rem Andes is a seismic survey ship designed to accommodate up to 60 people and support deepwater operations on the U.S. continental shelf.
Forty-Two people were aboard when the fire was reported, prompting abandon-ship operations where passengers transferred to nearby Good Samaritan vessels while Coast Guard aircrews monitored the scene.
The fire was extinguished around 3 p.m. Monday, with eight crew members remaining aboard as the ship drifted slowly northeast toward Whiskey Island.
Coast Guard officials will coordinate with the vessel's operating company to assess potential pollution threats and structural damage, as the investigation into the fire's cause remains ongoing.
