BMW targets margin recovery with cuts and local production

BMW plans to cut jobs, simplify models and invest €2 billion in German production as it targets margins of 3% to 5% by 2028.

  • On Wednesday, BMW presented recovery plans at its two-day Capital Market Day in Munich, aiming to rebuild margins after a series of profit warnings tied to weak performance in China.
  • Profitability pressures, including a 37% operating profit drop in early 2026 and a shock profit warning in June, prompted the manufacturer to slash 8,000 jobs in Germany as part of a wider overhaul.
  • Bernstein analysts reported BMW's mid-term target of 3% to 5% margins by 2028, with analyst Stephen Reitman stating, "BMW understands the solution is not simply cost-cutting."
  • Shares rose more than 3% Wednesday as the automaker detailed plans to expand its M and Alpina ranges and launch a luxury SUV positioned above the X7.
  • To restore margins to 8% to 10% by the 2030s, BMW is implementing a "local for local" strategy while simplifying its model range and integrating AI technology for crash simulations.
