BMW recalls nearly 60,000 vehicles over fire risk from potential A/C short-circuit issue

BMW will inspect and repair the AC wiring harness in nearly 59,000 vehicles to prevent fire risks; fewer than 1% are estimated to be affected, the company said.

  • This past week, BMW of North America recalled about 58,713 U.S. vehicles over a potential fire risk linked to an air conditioning wiring harness, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.
  • NHTSA found the electrical wiring harness for the air conditioning system can be damaged during cabin air filter replacement, and BMW estimates fewer than 1% of vehicles are affected.
  • Among the impacted vehicles are about 20,438 2024–2026 BMW 5 Series, about 15,154 2023–2026 BMW 7 Series, and about 11,917 2024–2026 BMW i5 vehicles.
  • BMW dealerships will inspect the wiring harness, replace it if needed, and install a retaining strap free of charge; vehicle owners who paid for repairs may seek reimbursement by contacting BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
  • Owner notification letters will be mailed April 13, VINs will be searchable on the NHTSA website that day, and the recall is listed under NHTSA campaign number 26V-096; as of Feb. 19, BMW reported no crashes or injuries.
