X Alternative Bluesky Introduces Algorithmic Opt-Out Option

The account-level control applies across AT Protocol apps and can take up to an hour to fully take effect, the company said.

  • On Thursday, Bluesky introduced a new algorithmic opt-out feature allowing users to prevent their posts from appearing in the app's main Discover feed, limiting visibility to non-followers.
  • Sometimes, users prefer to post for followers without exposure to larger crowds. Bluesky created this feature because not everyone wants to go viral or become a "main character" on the platform.
  • Available in Privacy and Security settings, the new tool is an account-level control, not a per-post filter. The company notes the change can take up to an hour to take effect.
  • While the setting limits recommendations, it does not make posts entirely private. The preference travels with the user via the Protocol, though other apps using the same Proto must choose whether to respect it.
  • Now, Bluesky describes this as "one of a few updates we're working on to give you more control over your experience and help you find your people." The company continues developing additional privacy-protecting features.
