Blues draw with Bulldogs to clinch AFL wildcard berth
Wade Derksen’s late equalizer sealed Carlton’s place in the wildcard round and kept Josh Fraser’s revival on track after 13 matches.
On Sunday, Carlton secured a wildcard finals berth after drawing 12.10 with the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium. The result confirms the Blues' place in the post-season following their dramatic second-half resurgence.
Interim coach Josh Fraser took charge in May after Carlton parted ways with Michael Voss, inheriting a team with just one win from nine matches. Under Fraser's leadership, the Blues have achieved 10 wins and a draw from 13 matches.
Wade Derksen leveled the scores with three minutes remaining after marking a Francis Evans snap, while Bulldogs star Ed Richards recorded 31 touches and two goals in a standout performance.
The draw eliminates St Kilda and Greater Western Sydney from finals contention with one round remaining. Carlton advances to the AFL's wildcard round, securing a quasi-final berth in the post-season.
Fraser has presented to the selection panel for the permanent senior coach role, and it seems implausible the club would look elsewhere after his three-month transformation of the team. Every win heightens his chances of becoming Voss's permanent replacement.
