‘Put on the Map’: Blue Jays Gift $50K to Saanich Baseball, Softball Academy
The Jays Care First Pitch Fund is distributing $300,000 nationwide as the team marks its 50th season.
- The Toronto Blue Jays and Jays Care Foundation are donating $50,000 to the Lambrick Park Baseball and Softball Academy, selected by former major league outfielder Michael Saunders on July 1.
- Part of the Jays Care First Pitch Fund, the grant distributes $300,000 across Canada to celebrate the franchise's 50th season, with five other Canadian Blue Jays alumni also donating $50,000 each to youth organizations.
- Campbell, a coach at the academy, said Saunders' involvement has elevated training services: "The level of professionalism and the services we can provide for our students has gone up to another level."
- Saunders previously covered fees for students in financial need, prompting the academy to establish the Friends of the Lambrick Park Baseball and Softball Academy Society. "This money is an unexpected, but such a generous influx of cash," Campbell said.
- Jays Care Executive Director Peter King stated the initiative aims to inspire the next generation of baseball players nationwide, as the academy hosted about 95 students last year and saw eight senior athletes recently commit to college programs.
