Fire that Burned Osoyoos, B.C., Home Sparked While Owner Was Mowing Lawn, RCMP Say
OKANAGAN-SIMILKAMEEN, BRITISH COLUMBIA, JUL 17 – Dry conditions and mowing sparked a fire that destroyed two homes and a vehicle, with heavy winds aiding rapid spread, officials said.
- On July 17, 2025, Osoyoos Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire near The Cottages on Osoyoos Lake, followed by a grass fire prompting BC Wildfire Service response.
- Sparks from a lawn mower during very dry conditions ignited the blaze, while heavy winds fueled its rapid spread.
- On Radio Tower Road near the north end of Osoyoos Lake, two airtankers are fighting the 2.4-hectare blaze that engulfed a vehicle—a tire exploded—and remains out of control.
- Osoyoos Fire Rescue crews have restricted road access, Jason Bayda said, while fire crews urge people to stay away to ensure safety.
- As of 4:20 p.m., the BC Wildfire Service said it is deploying ground and aerial resources, while Osoyoos RCMP confirmed it did not spread to a second home.
