BAYFIELD COUNTY, WISCONSIN, AUG 4 – A 2-year-old female black bear was freed after over a week with a plastic jar stuck on its head and relocated safely, weighing about 70 pounds, officials said.
- On Aug. 3, 2025, U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services staff freed a two-year-old female black bear near Cable, Wisconsin, after its head was stuck in a plastic jar.
- On July 26, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources first learned of the bear, which traveled nearly 50 miles across Sawyer, Bayfield, and Douglas counties, thwarting trapping efforts.
- On Sunday, a trained wildlife professional tranquilized the bear, staff cut off the jug, and the bear received two plastic ear tags for identification.
- Near Cable, the bear was alert when released and quickly began feeding on a patch of berries, then moved to a wooded area with ample food and water.
- Now roaming free without injury, the bear has the best chance as natural food is abundant in northern Wisconsin, and Randy Johnson noted it survived on body fat reserves.
