Birmingham bin workers warned they face blacklisting over strike action

Agency bin workers face exclusion from permanent roles if they strike, amid a dispute causing 97% of refuse workers to vote for ongoing industrial action, union says.

  • On Thursday, Sky News footage showed a Job&Talent manager warning Birmingham bin workers employed by Job&Talent agency at the Atlas Depot that the council would bar agency workers from permanent jobs if they joined strike action.
  • Unite the Union says the dispute began last summer, with strike action starting January 2025 over Birmingham City Council’s plan to remove Waste Recycling and Collection Officer roles.
  • Many agency staff say they have long service with the council, while Job&Talent agency said the manager's comments were part of a longer discussion and `We do not engage in or condone any form of blacklisting`.
  • The council declared a major incident as rubbish piled up, with 97% of refuse workers voting to continue strikes, and Sharon Graham urged `Ministers must act now to stop this appalling behaviour and bring this dispute to an end with a fair deal for the bin workers`.
  • In response, Birmingham City Council officials named include Chris Smiles and Rob Edmondson, and the council did not respond to a comment request, stating they do not condone blacklisting.
