Halifax Misses Out on UK Town of Culture Shortlist as Government Reveals Its 15 Finalists
More than 400 towns applied, and the winner will get a £3 million grant to deliver a cultural programme in 2028.
On Thursday, the UK Government announced a 15-town shortlist for the inaugural UK Town of Culture 2028 title, selected from nearly 400 applicants competing for a £3 million government grant.
Designed to replicate the success of the City of Culture award, the initiative aims to restore pride in local areas across Britain by encouraging communities to showcase their cultural heritage.
An independent panel chaired by Sir Phil Redmond, creator of Brookside, divided the 15 towns into small, medium, and large categories based on population size, with each receiving £60,000 to develop bids.
Judges will select one finalist from each category, with the overall winner announced early next year; the winner receives £3 million while the two runners-up each receive £250,000 to support cultural programs.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy praised the nearly 400 applicants' pride in their towns, while panel chair Redmond described the response as "overwhelming" and confirmed plans to visit the finalists.
