Farming groups applaud private member’s bill aimed at speeding up product approvals
The bill would let Canada grant provisional approval within 90 days for products already cleared in two trusted jurisdictions.
- Conservative MP David Bexte introduced Bill C-273 to fast-track Canadian approval of farm inputs within 90 days if already approved in at least two "trusted" jurisdictions.
- Farmers in Canada wait years to access products already approved and used safely in New Zealand, the European Union and the United States; in some cases these products never come to Canada, Bexte said.
- Canadian Federation of Agriculture vice-president Jill Verwey said the organization is "very supportive," stating "Being able to have all the necessary tools in the tool box for producers is a primary objective in ensuring that we can be competitive."
- Building on a 2023 effort by Liberal MP Kody Blois that stalled before the election, the legislation also amends the Food and Drugs Act to accelerate veterinary drug access; Blois, now parliamentary secretary to Prime Minister Mark Carney, declined to comment.
- Qualified nations would include Australia, the United Kingdom, the European Union and New Zealand, while the agriculture minister retains full authority to deny or cancel approval if health, safety or environmental risks are identified.
