Bill to Recognise Amaravati as Andhra Pradesh Capital Likely to Be Tabled in Lok Sabha
The amendment would give Amaravati legal certainty and clear the way for more construction and infrastructure work, officials said.
- The Union government will introduce the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, formally designating Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh.
- Previous YSR Congress government proposals had stalled development by suggesting a "three capitals" formula with Visakhapatnam as executive capital, Kurnool as judicial capital, and Amaravati as legislative capital.
- After returning to power in 2024, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu revived the Amaravati project, with the Capital Region Development Authority now commencing works valued at over Rs 90,000 crore.
- Following a resolution passed by the state Assembly on March 28, the amendment provides legal sanctity to insulate the capital's settlement from political uncertainty and restore investor confidence.
- Once passed by Parliament, the Bill will enable further infrastructure projects across the 217 sq km capital region, which includes over 34,000 acres of land voluntarily contributed by farmers.
