Biden Says He Orally Granted End-of-Term Pardons, Later Recorded Using Autopen
UNITED STATES, JUL 18 – Biden authorized over 8,000 pardons and commutations via autopen to manage volume while maintaining he personally approved all decisions, amid ongoing congressional and DOJ probes.
- In a July 10 interview with The New York Times, Biden said his White House staff used an autopen to sign a wave of pardons, confirming staff used the autopen device for sweeping decisions.
- Faced with an impossible volume of cases, Biden pardoned over 1,500 individuals, meeting with aides until nearly 10 p.m. Jan. 19 to set criteria, according to the Times.
