BGC Okanagan homelessness prevention program gets $10K boost
The grant will help expand early mental health support for Grade 8 students as BGC Okanagan works to prevent youth homelessness.
BGC Okanagan received a $10,000 grant from the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation to support the Upstream Kelowna program, which helps identify youth struggling with mental health at school and home.
According to BGC Okanagan President and CEO Jeremy Welder, homelessness often begins when youth feel disconnected from school, family, or community, prompting the organization to shift help 'upstream' before a crisis hits.
The program provides individualized supports and resources in collaboration with schools and community partners; Upstream has demonstrated significant impact since its 2021 launch in the community.
Welder stated the investment supports scaling goals to ensure every Grade 8 student in the Central Okanagan receives early identification and support, emphasizing no one should wait until crisis to get help.
Nimmi Kanji, Executive Director of the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation, said the foundation is proud to support BGC Okanagan with the Community Board Grant, advancing youth mental health initiatives.
