- Influential Los Angeles artist Betye Saar died in her sleep on Sunday, July 26, her gallery Roberts Projects announced. She was 99 years old, four days shy of her 100th birthday.
- A central figure of the 1960s Black Arts Movement, Saar pioneered assemblage—sculptures made of found objects—to powerfully tackle racism and anti-Blackness through reclaimed materials and subversive imagery.
- Her 1972 work "The Liberation of Aunt Jemima" catapulted her to prominence by reclaiming derogatory "mammy" statuettes, arming the figure with a rifle and hand grenade to symbolize Black liberation.
- With her centennial approaching, Saar formed the Betye Saar Legacy Group in 2025 to preserve her archive and ensure her legacy endured; she also mentored painter Kerry James Marshall and other Black artists.
- Saar's work resides in more than 80 international museums, and in spring 2026, the artist was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, cementing her status as a foundational figure.
