U.S. Sens. Baldwin, Ernst: Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Expand Access to Mental Health Care for Farmers, Rural Communities

UNITED STATES, JUL 15 – The bipartisan Farmers First Act would increase funding by $75 million over five years to expand mental health services tailored for farmers facing suicide rates 3.5 times higher than average.

  • On 2025-07-18 in Washington, D.C., U.S. Senators Tammy Baldwin and Joni Ernst introduced the Farmers First Act of 2025 to expand mental health resources for farmers.
  • Because farmers are about three and half times more likely to die by suicide, Senator Baldwin said, `Too often, the stress, isolation, and physical demands of this job leave them with nowhere to turn`.
  • Allocating $75 million over five years, the bill will fund $15 million annually from FY 2026–2030 to hire behavioral health specialists, establish crisis lines, and build referral relationships.
  • Industry groups welcomed the bill, while Jeanette Lombardo said `This bill will provide critical support for agricultural producers facing stress, isolation, and mental health challenges, and we urge swift passage this Congress`.
  • In the House, Representatives Randy Feenstra and Angie Craig are pushing the bill, which also addresses Veteran farmers and farmers of color, and in the Senate it's co-sponsored by Senators John Boozman, Tina Smith, and Susan Collins.
