Trump's Fed ex-nominee Shelton to advise Bessent, Treasury says
Shelton will advise Bessent on currency policy and financial conditions in China, as Treasury fills senior posts without Senate approval.
On Friday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent appointed Judy Shelton as a counselor to advise on currency policy, with a particular focus on "evaluating financial conditions in China." The appointment requires no Senate confirmation.
In 2019, a bipartisan group of Senators rejected Shelton's nomination to the Federal Reserve over her views on Fed independence and the gold standard. This rejection establishes her controversial economic record.
Shelton holds a Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Utah and served as a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution. She authored "Money Meltdown" in 1988 and "The Coming Soviet Crash" the following year.
Bessent recently named David Zervos, former chief market strategist at Jeffries, as a counselor—neither position requires Senate approval. This approach allows the Treasury to bypass legislative confirmation.
A Wall Street Journal report identified seven Senate-confirmed officials who departed the Treasury through August, reflecting broader departmental turnover. Shelton's appointment signals Bessent's effort to reshape the advisory team.
