Beshear discusses impact of General Assembly budget cuts on health and family services
Beshear said the cuts will force reductions in Medicaid, family support and foster care services for vulnerable Kentuckians.
- On Thursday, Governor Andy Beshear and Cabinet for Health and Family Services Secretary Steven Stack discussed state budget cuts, warning that reductions will impact Medicaid Services, family support, foster care, and senior meal programs.
- Beshear stated his administration repeatedly warned the General Assembly that failure to increase funding for rising service costs would force painful outcomes, yet the legislature failed to take corrective action.
- "Actions will have to be taken regarding the foster care network," Stack said, noting the cuts affect payment rates and support programs intended to help vulnerable children overcome adversities.
- Calling the reductions "painful," Stack noted that families relying on these services are about to feel the effects. "It breaks my heart to have to announce these things," Stack said.
- While Beshear noted the administration cannot provide funds that do not exist, he emphasized that officials remain committed to doing everything possible to help Kentuckians succeed despite fiscal constraints.
