Serious Crime Drops 8 Percent Across Kentucky, According to New Report

The report shows 17 of 23 serious-crime categories declined, with drug offenses down 11.25% and homicides down 15.64%, officials said.

  • On Thursday, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear announced reports of serious crime in the commonwealth decreased for the second straight year. The 2025 Crime in Kentucky report shows Class A serious crime dropped 8.14% compared to 2024.
  • Of the 23 categories tracked in the report, 17 showed fewer reported crimes. Arson offenses decreased by 24%, while burglary and breaking and entering offenses dropped by 17%.
  • Four straight years of declines in overdose deaths continued, with a 23% drop in 2025. Kentucky also recorded two consecutive years of decreases in recidivism rates among individuals released from prison.
  • Gov. Beshear credited law enforcement and public safety officials for the progress made in stopping serious crime. "Together, we're building a safer New Kentucky Home for our families," the governor said.
  • Law enforcement agencies submit data through the National Incident-Based Reporting System, the standard reporting system for the FBI. Agencies use the state's KYOPS tool or their own incident-based systems to report electronically.
