German police arrest Syrian suspected of helping attack at Holocaust memorial
Prosecutors say Khalaf A. spent the afternoon before the attack with the stabber and encouraged him to go ahead with the plan.
On Wednesday, Berlin police arrested Syrian national Khalaf A. as an alleged accomplice to a stabbing attack on a Spanish tourist at the Holocaust Memorial, with federal prosecutors suspecting him of accessory to attempted murder.
The primary suspect, Syrian national Wassim Al M., was convicted in March on attempted murder charges and attempted membership in a foreign terrorist organization after traveling from Leipzig to Berlin in 2025.
At trial, presiding judge Doris Husch noted he targeted the Holocaust Memorial believing he would find people of Jewish faith there, stabbing the tourist in the throat while shouting 'Allahu akbar,' or God is great.
Prosecutors allege Khalaf A. spent the afternoon of February 21, 2025 with Wassim Al M., encouraging him to carry out the planned assault, making him allegedly central to the attack's execution.
The stabbing occurred two days before a German national election where immigration became central following deadly attacks involving immigrants, positioning the case within broader tensions over extremist ideologies and faith-based targeting in Germany.
In connection with the stabbing attack at the Berlin Holocaust Memorial in February 2025, another man was arrested and encouraged the now convicted attacker to do so.
