Bengal passes bills to remove some Muslims from OBC list as ordered by Calcutta HC
Lawmakers regularized 66 communities and approved the change with 186 votes in favor and 17 against, following a Calcutta High Court directive.
- On Monday, The West Bengal Assembly passed two Bills reducing the OBC quota from 17 per cent to 7 per cent, aligning with Calcutta High Court directives on reservation in services and posts.

- Backward Classes Welfare Gaurishankar Ghosh told the House the government removed 113 classes included without field surveys, retaining 66 sub-classes that were added following various surveys.
- The Bills passed with 186 votes in favor and 17 against, revealing divisions between TMC loyalists of Mamata Banerjee and a rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee.
- BJP MLA from Dum Dum Arijit Bakshi accused the previous administration of creating the original list to "solely appease the minority community and secure its vote bank," depriving genuinely backward sections.
