Belarus opposition leader released from jail in US-brokered deal
- Belarus released opposition leader Syarhei Tsikhanouski and 13 other political prisoners on Saturday as part of a US-brokered deal.
- The release followed a visit to Minsk by US envoy Keith Kellogg amid tensions after Lukashenko's disputed 2020 election and subsequent crackdowns.
- Tsikhanouski was imprisoned in 2021 with an 18-year sentence for attempting to run against Lukashenko in the August 2020 election before his detention.
- Fourteen prisoners released include Belarusian, Japanese, Polish, and Swedish nationals who are currently receiving care in Lithuania where Tsikhanouski reunited with his wife.
- Although some detainees have been released, more than 1,150 political prisoners are still held as opposition figure Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya actively campaigns for their liberation ahead of the January 2025 elections.
