Beirut strike killed top Hezbollah commander, group says
Hezbollah confirmed the death of senior commander Haj Youssef Ismail Hashem in a strike that also wounded civilians and fighters, hitting a meeting of its leadership.
- On Wednesday, Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee confirmed an airstrike in Beirut killed senior Hezbollah commander Haj Youssef Ismail Hashem, with seven people dead and 26 wounded according to Lebanese authorities.
- Hashem commanded Hezbollah's southern front, inheriting the position from Ali Karaki, and a senior Hezbollah official called his death the "harshest blow" since Haytham Ali Tabtabai's assassination in November 2025.
- Warships struck a tent in the Jnah area where Hashem was meeting with senior commanders, also killing Hezbollah member Mohammad Baqir al-Nabulsi and other second-tier officials, according to Lebanese and Hezbollah sources.
- Sociology professor Talal Atrissi at the Lebanese University said the killing is "unlikely to affect the group's conduct on the battlefield," noting Hezbollah maintains replacements for senior roles.
- Since fighting reignited early last month, more than 1.2 million people have been displaced in Lebanon, and Israeli attacks have killed more than 1,260 people according to Lebanese authorities.
