Beers, Braids and Bonding: Hairstyle Classes for Dads Aim to Challenge Gender Norms
A dozen fathers practice ponytails, braids and ballet buns as organizers say the classes help build confidence and create bonding time.
In Winnipeg, Curtis Einarson joined about a dozen fathers at Sookram Brewing for a Beers and Braids class on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, aimed at upgrading their limited hairstyling skills for their daughters.
Makeup artist Ren Cherlet introduced the concept to Manitoba earlier this year after seeing a similar event called Pints and Ponytails in England, designed to foster bonding among fathers and provide supportive hairstyling instruction.
Participants practice techniques like fishtail braids and ballet buns on mannequin heads with instructor assistance. Caleb Doerksen noted that "you can kind of see throughout the evening that their confidence is just building."
Beyond practical skills, Cherlet said the event provides a "necessity for dads to be able to kind of come together" and break from traditional gender roles; many fathers arrive alone and leave with new friendships.
Demand for sessions has surged since the first event in March, with Cherlet's inbox flooded with requests for future classes. The program, capped at about 20, continues offering fathers a casual space to master hairstyling techniques.
