Becky Druhan, Amanda Mombourquette Enter Nova Scotia Liberal Leadership Race
The party will choose its first female leader as Becky Druhan and Amanda Mombourquette pitch plans to rebuild after winning just 2 seats in 2024.
The Nova Scotia Liberal Party announced Friday that Lunenburg West MLA Becky Druhan and Richmond County Deputy Warden Amanda Mombourquette are the two approved leadership candidates, ensuring the party will elect its first female leader.
Since the 2024 election, when Zach Churchill lost his seat, the party has lacked a permanent leader; Sydney-Membertou MLA Derek Mombourquette and Timberlea-Prospect MLA Iain Rankin have served as interim leaders.
Former Progressive Conservative cabinet minister Druhan joined the Liberals in May after leaving the Progressive Conservative caucus due to "some differences in principle" with leadership.
Mombourquette emphasizes her municipal government experience and aims to rebuild the party with 56 strong electoral district associations and candidates for the next general election.
Voting begins November 16, with the winner announced at a convention on November 21; party president Margaret Miller called the race an "important opportunity" to earn the trust of Nova Scotians.
