Beaver Attacks 8-Year-Old Boy Who Was Fishing in New Jersey
Officials said the beaver attacked multiple people and exposed several victims to rabies, prompting treatment and a health alert.
- On Sunday, May 3, an 8-year-old boy was attacked by a beaver at Lake Henry in Continental Soldiers Park, Mahwah, New Jersey, after the animal exited the water and charged him around 6 p.m.
- The Mahwah Township Health Department confirmed Tuesday that the beaver tested positive for rabies after it "had contact with several people" at the park a few days prior.
- Captain Michael Blondin of the Mahwah Police Department said the beaver "exited the lake and charged him," with a family friend fighting the animal until EMS responded and transported the boy to a hospital.
- Victims bitten by the beaver are currently receiving treatment, and the department advised anyone with contact to "notify the Mahwah Township Health Department immediately" for medical assessment.
- Clinical rabies is virtually 100 per cent fatal once symptoms appear; the Mayo Clinic notes that "anyone who may have a risk of contracting rabies should receive rabies vaccinations for protection.
