B.C.'s Eby declines to reveal size of donation after $10-a-day daycare revelation
Eby said the family returned the subsidy value after their children’s daycare joined the program, prompting new questions about means testing and access.
On Tuesday in Vancouver, British Columbia NDP Leader David Eby confirmed his family benefited from the $10-a-day childcare program after their children's YMCA centre joined the initiative. Eby declined to disclose the specific donation amount his family returned to the facility.
Conservative candidate Margareta Dovgal called the situation "fundamentally unfair," while party child care critic Heather Maahs labeled the $10-per-day system a "boondoggle," arguing it restricts parental choice rather than expanding childcare options.
Sharon Gregson, spokesperson for The Coalition of Child Care Advocates, argued the donation is "beside the point," emphasizing the government failed to fulfill former premier John Horgan's promise of universal care. Roughly 10 per cent of provincial spaces participate.
With the Oct. 24 provincial election approaching, Conservatives are advocating for means testing to prioritize families in need. Dovgal indicated the party will release full childcare plans soon, aiming to expand options and allow access to independent operators.
Eby faces further scrutiny ahead of Wednesday's televised leaders' debate, where he maintains his focus on working with the federal government to create affordable childcare spaces for all British Columbians. The province paused expansion in the 2026 budget.
