B.C. winery owner calls for improving interprovincial alcohol sales
Ron Kubek says provincial liquor rules still block Canadian producers from reaching customers despite a new petition and a 45-day federal response window.
On Sept 25, Ron Kubek, owner of Lightning Rock Winery in Summerland, presented Petition e-7258 in the House of Commons supporting MP Dan Albas's Bill C-262 to remove interprovincial alcohol sales barriers.
The United States has effectively closed an important market to many Canadian producers, prompting Kubek to argue Canada should prioritize opening its domestic market, which remains restricted by provincial liquor board systems.
Although Canadian Premiers signed an agreement on DTC alcohol sales, the deal creates no legally enforceable rights for producers, allowing provinces to maintain separate reporting requirements and markups.
"We don't need governments to protect us from competition; we need access to customers," Kubek said, contending Canadian wineries must reach domestic buyers to thrive.
Parliament has 45 calendar days to respond to the Petition, which represents the latest push in Albas's 14 years of effort to improve interprovincial trade regulations.
