B.C. university gets trades training boost, adds 462 seats

- The latest Labour Market Outlook predicts more than 72,000 job openings for skilled trades over the next decade. Officials anticipate at least a third of those currently working in construction skilled trades will retire over the same period.
- Funding of $241 million aims to create 5,000 new skilled-trades training seats in 2026-27, bumping total capacity at Kwantlen Polytechnic University to more than 1,700 spots. British Columbia's provincial government says this investment addresses training gaps.
- Eby said he wants to adjust the provincial nominee program to attract skilled international workers. He noted speaking with officials in Canada about fine-tuning immigration, stating, "they have a place here in British Columbia."
- Meagan Gordon of the Pembina Institute said the workforce is not being replaced at the rate needed to achieve provincial ambitions. Michael Burt of Signal49 Research added that re-prioritizing immigration for persistent construction gaps may help address shortages.
