MOUNT BENSON AREA NEAR NANAIMO, BRITISH COLUMBIA, JUL 22 – The transfer advances a 2020 agreement to return over 3,000 hectares and supports sustainable forestry and economic independence for the Snuneymuxw First Nation.

- Earlier transfers included a 212-hectare handover in January 2024 at Mount Benson East and a 34-hectare transfer in October 2024 at Mount Benson South, with this parcel in Mount Benson North following suit.
- Snuneymuxw Chief Mike Wyse said, `this is a meaningful step forward in restoring our responsibility over our lands.` adding that each returned parcel strengthens economic independence and cultural ties to te’tuxwtun North.
- Remaining work on Mt. McKay, west of Nanaimo Airport, includes 2,091 hectares still pending under the 2020 Land Transfer Agreement.
