B.C. Transfers Large Chunk of Nanaimo Area Land to Vancouver Island First Nation

MOUNT BENSON AREA NEAR NANAIMO, BRITISH COLUMBIA, JUL 22 – The transfer advances a 2020 agreement to return over 3,000 hectares and supports sustainable forestry and economic independence for the Snuneymuxw First Nation.

  • The B.C. government transferred more than 700 hectares near Nanaimo on Tuesday, completing another phase of its land return process.
  • As part of the 2020 Land Transfer Agreement, the province pledged to return more than 3,000 hectares of traditional territory to Snuneymuxw First Nation.
  • Earlier transfers included a 212-hectare handover in January 2024 at Mount Benson East and a 34-hectare transfer in October 2024 at Mount Benson South, with this parcel in Mount Benson North following suit.
  • Snuneymuxw Chief Mike Wyse said, `this is a meaningful step forward in restoring our responsibility over our lands.` adding that each returned parcel strengthens economic independence and cultural ties to te’tuxwtun North.
  • Remaining work on Mt. McKay, west of Nanaimo Airport, includes 2,091 hectares still pending under the 2020 Land Transfer Agreement.
