BC School Sports awards for 12 people, one school in the province

BC School Sports recognized 12 people and one school for contributions to student-athletes and school sport across eight award categories.

  • On Friday, May 8, 2026, BC School Sports honored twelve British Columbians and one school at the Hilton Whistler Resort, recognizing contributions that strengthen school sport and enrich student-athlete experiences.
  • BCSS serves as the provincial governing body for interscholastic sport in British Columbia, supporting a network of 450-plus public and independent member schools and facilitating more than 123,000 student-athlete registrations annually across 18 sports and 60 provincial championships.
  • Award recipients included Rick Thiessen of Mennonite Educational Institute, who received the Honour Award, and Oak Bay High School, named Most Inspirational School; Patricia Anderson of Gleneagle Secondary earned the Women in Sport & Leadership Award.
  • Other honorees included Administrator Dennis Pavan of Notre Dame Regional Secondary and Athletic Director Peter Battistin of New Westminster Secondary, both receiving the Citation of Excellence, alongside Media Person of the Year Tom Zillich of the Surrey Now-Leader.
  • The impact of these individuals extends beyond competition to shape positive student experiences. "Each year, we are reminded the strength of school sport lies in the people behind it," said BCSS executive director Jordan Abney.
