B.C. parents call out province funding cut for 2SLGBTQ+ anti-bullying program
The funding cut has forced staff reductions at the ARC Foundation, raising concerns about support for anti-bullying resources for 2SLGBTQ+ students.
- On Monday, July 20, Langford resident Kimberley Guiry introduced a motion urging the province to restore ARC Foundation funding for the SOGI 123 program, arguing the withdrawal undermines inclusive classroom efforts for 2SLGBTQ+ students.
- The Ministry of Education and Child Care recently discontinued funding for the ARC Foundation, which developed the SOGI 123 program in 2016, forcing the non-profit to cut staff and threatening its anti-bullying support capacity.
- Guiry recalled her daughters facing exclusion over clothing choices, noting a teacher used SOGI 123 resources to foster inclusion. "Just by using the resources available, they created a space where we said, We can do better," she said.
- Sooke School District superintendent Paul Block stated the district's commitment to inclusive schools remains independent of external funding sources. Frazer Johnson, however, argues the decision creates a "momentum killer" for progress amid recent Greater Victoria NDP MLAs' Pride support.
- The Ministry confirmed that while direct funding is ending, optional SOGI 123 classroom resources will remain available online for teachers. The province shifts toward school-district-led capacity building to sustain inclusive classroom support.
