B.C. paramedics vote 97% in favour of strike; job action pending
More than 6,000 B.C. paramedics and dispatchers voted 97% in favor of strike action amid stalled contract talks over pay, safety, and mental health supports, union said.
- Yesterday, Ambulance Paramedics & Emergency Dispatchers of BC, CUPE Local 873, said 97 per cent of more than 6,000 union members voted in favour of strike action.
- After talks since September, bargaining hit an impasse as sessions between Feb. 10 and 13 failed, the union says, with negotiations ongoing with the government.
- Nearly 80 per cent of members participated in the vote, which was conducted electronically over a two-week period, the union said.
- Legal rules require that the Labour Relations Board issues Essential Services Orders before BC Emergency Health Services can engage in legal job action, so a strike is not immediate.
- Facing staffing shortfalls and safety concerns, the union cites pressures and mental-health risks in rural, remote and Indigenous communities and calls for a mediator, the union said.
