Most Members of B.C.’s Legislature Vote Against Bill to Stop Land Acknowledgements
88 of 93 Members of the Legislative Assembly opposed the bill aiming to ban land acknowledgements in publicly funded schools and bodies, citing reconciliation efforts.
- On Thursday, the legislature in Victoria rejected the Land Acknowledgement Prohibition Act, with 85 MLAs voting no in the first reading.
- Dallas Brodie, MLA for Vancouver-Quilchena , introduced the bill calling land acknowledgements the `anthem of a suicidal nation` to ban statements that `deny the sovereignty of the Crown` or attribute guilt, after being booted from the B.C. Conservative Party earlier this year.
- Supporters included two Conservative MLAs and an Independent who pushed the bill to a recorded vote, with Harman Bhangu, Heather Maahs, Tara Armstrong, and Jordan Kealy backing it before it failed 85 to five.
- Indigenous Relations Minister Spencer Chandra Herbert denounced the bill as `hate, pure and simple`, while A'aliya Warbus said territorial acknowledgements `does not hurt anybody` and stressed reconciliation depends on acknowledging history.
- Acknowledgements have long Indigenous roots and their use has grown in recent years; it is unusual for private members' bills to fail at first reading, making this One B.C. party's second defeat.
