Valemount Mayor Arrested Following Allegations of Sexual Assault

Owen Torgerson says he will stay on as mayor while RCMP prepare a report for prosecutors and charges remain pending.

  • Valemount Mayor Owen Torgerson was arrested on allegations of sexual assault earlier this week, but charges have not been laid. Torgerson continues serving as Village mayor and Regional District director.
  • When a crime is reported in B.C., police prepare a report for Crown counsel to determine if charges are warranted. The RCMP cannot confirm or deny investigations until formal charges have been laid.
  • Torgerson voluntarily resigned from his position as chair of the Columbia Basin Trust board of directors. He told The Goat he retained legal counsel and resigned to address the allegations with more personal time.
  • Valemount CAO Anne Yanciw confirmed the Village is aware of the situation and is taking steps to ensure continuity of operations and support for employees. The Village will not comment further.
  • If charges are eventually laid, Torgerson will be mandated to take a leave of absence under sections 109.2 and 109.3 of the Community Charter. The timeline for deciding charges varies case by case.
