New evacuation alert issued for Old Fort, B.C., residents after landslide
Officials say the slide has destroyed sections of Old Fort Road and left about 70 evacuees relying on emergency support services.
- On Sunday, a 400-metre landslide severed road access to Old Fort, prompting the Peace River Regional District to order the evacuation of about 70 residents from the community five kilometres south of Fort St. John.
- Extremely unstable ground conditions, exacerbated by heavy moisture and snowmelt this year, caused the slide; a section of road shifted about 48 metres downslope, the PRRD reported.
- Emergency services currently cannot reach the isolated community, forcing residents who remained to shelter in place and conserve essential supplies while awaiting safe access restoration.
- Jordan Kealy, Independent MLA for Peace River North, criticized the provincial notification process, stating many residents received no cellphone alerts and calling the situation "completely wrong."
- The Transportation Ministry continues monitoring the slide site to determine when access becomes manageable; the PRRD warned terrain stabilization could take weeks, echoing challenges from a similar 2018 landslide.
