New Trade Deal to Chop Red Tape, Knock Down Trade Barriers Across Canada
The agreement eliminates duplicate testing and approvals for thousands of products, aiming to reduce red tape and boost business growth across Canada, says B.C. minister Ravi Kahlon.
- On Nov. 17, the Canadian Mutual Recognition Agreement was signed by all provinces, territories and the federal government as Ravi Kahlon announced the deal in Victoria while trade ministers met in Yellowknife.
- B.C. led the initiative, with Ravi Kahlon calling it the largest red tape reduction in Canada's history amid global inflation and instability from the Trump administration.
- By applying mutual recognition, the Canadian Mutual Recognition Agreement takes effect in December 2025 covering thousands of products including manufacturing inputs, health technologies, clothing, toys, industrial products, tires and vehicles, while excluding food.
- Canadian businesses will no longer have to search through rules from all provinces and territories to sell nationwide, and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business and Greater Vancouver Board of Trade praised the deal as a landmark for firms and consumers.
- Officials say mutual recognition positions Canada to build a unified Canadian market while building on B.C.'s May 2025 Economic Stabilization Act and the Look West plan.
